Attending virtual meetings, carrying out presentations via video calls and doing almost every work online can be overwhelming. As an adult, you know too well how difficult it is to transition completely into a digital world during the pandemic.
Your child certainly feels the same way as he attends a virtual school. No more chitchat with seatmates before teacher arrives. Teacher will just be on his computer screen. Class participation will be done through chats or video calls. All these changes can make your child feel overwhelmed, anxious or unmotivated. These are valid reactions, which you cannot just dismiss.
As a parent, it is your role to help your child adjust to the new normal schooling and empower him to focus on his academic goals while having fun in a totally new school setting. Here are some tips to help you make online schooling as effective as possible for your child:
1. Create a schedule.
Routine is very important to keep a student motivated in his studies while inside your home. Remind him that summer is over and school time is here. Creating a schedule puts things in a step-by-step manner and fosters guided discipline. As kids are visual, make a colorful and appealing calendar near his study desk so he can check and stick to his daily schedule.
2. Give your child enough time to adjust.
Your child is overwhelmed. Just like adults, children also need time to adjust. This is an opportunity to exercise your patience in meeting him where he is, along with your persistence in leading him to the goal. Don’t be too hard on your child who is still getting the hang of schooling in the new normal. Instead of putting a pressure on him, be your child’s cheerleader who can motivate him to reach his academic goals while having fun. Set rules and expectations but make room for adjustments.
3. Create an area at home conducive to learning.
Environment plays a large role in productivity and wellness. Declutter a private corner at your home and turn it into a clean and organized study area. Set up the computer. Get your little student a comfortable chair and desk. Set up the storage for all his essential school materials. increase lighting levels. If possible, let your child help in designing his study area. He will be more productive during online class hours if he is in a place that is comfortable and appealing for him.
4. Remove distractions during online class hours.
Focus is something that needs extra effort when it comes to online learning. Make sure that the study area is away from the family’s television or favorite play areas. Aside from the tool he is using for online schooling, remove other gadgets from your child’s sight. Remove unnecessary apps from his computer or gadget. It is best to have a separate gadget for games and other recreational apps.
5. Choose a school experienced in online teaching.
Online learning comes from competent online teaching.
