What does it take to be a Cloud Architect?

Do you want to be a cloud architect?  Instead of designing buildings and houses, why not build and design the cloud—at least, in the digital sense.

Google Drive. iCloud. Yahoo Mail. Amazon. Have you ever wondered how the Internet can keep all of the world’s important information to enable you and me to access them anytime and anywhere?

It’s time to learn about another innovation of science and technology—cloud computing. The people behind the awesomeness of cloud technology are called cloud architects.

What is cloud computing architecture?

Cloud computing is the process of storing and accessing data over the internet so that your files do not consume your computer, tablet, or phone’s limited storage capacity. By doing so, multiple users can access data anywhere under the sun, even from a remote server. Just as how clouds hide parts of the sky and sun from sight, the cloud conceals the elaborate network of software systems involved in providing cloud computing services, which is called cloud architecture.

The world of cloud computing opens an ocean of opportunities for every industry around the world. In fact, even the world’s most innovative companies need cloud architects to run Google, Netflix, and Amazon. Even Adobe, Apple iCloud, Samsung, and Twitter use cloud computing to provide services to the people. Moreover, resources used in banking, healthcare, government services, education, and even sports are reaping the benefits of cloud computing.

What is the role of a cloud architect?

Cloud architecture acts as the blueprint of a house that contains and connects all individual technologies or information to create one big house (or cloud). Just like real houses that need architects, cloud infrastructure also needs a cloud architect to convert the technical requirements of a project into the final product. Imagine being an architect but for computers — from the assessment of needs, design, and details of the system, cost of the project, and what kind of functionality is needed.

What skills are needed to become a cloud architect?

While architects who are good at advanced math and design, cloud architects need to be well versed in:

  • Operating systems such as Linux, Ubuntu, and Windows
  • Networking fundamentals like TCP, IP address, and HTTP
  • Computer programming languages like Python and Java
  • Computer security

Aside from these technical, cloud architects also need the following soft skills:

  • Communication skills to be able to run meetings with end users and customer or technical experts
  • Lleadership skills to convince stakeholders on the need for your project
  • Inquisitiveness and willingness to learn
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to make and manage action plans for projects that take longer than months to complete

With almost everything going digital nowadays, cloud architect is becoming an in-demand role. If you are interested in cloud architecture, invest in learning about this field and developing the essential skills for it as early as possible.
